Selling Mon Amie
Selling Mon Amie
2013
While we were in the middle of renovating our new home, we continued to live aboard Mon Amie at Marina Jack in downtown Sarasota. Although we didn’t want to depart with this lovely home on the water, it was simply too much to maintain and not use while living in a home. We decided to sell her. Prior to that decision, Al made arrangements with Snead Island Boat Works to haul her and do some routine and some not so routine maintenance work.
We were teased enough by our fellow Krogen cruisers about keeping Mon Amie in such excellent condition that it was called, “the million dollar Krogen 42.” Not bad for a 17 year old trawler! As a result, we thought we could sell her on our own without a broker. Al placed an ad in the Krogen Cruisers web site the first week in April. Within the first week, we had 3 hits requesting detailed information and photos. As time progressed, we would get one or two hits a week.
We moved Mon Amie to the boat yard on Monday morning, May 13th. She was hauled out of the water as soon as we arrived. In the meantime, Al made arrangements to have a survey done while she was out of the water.
We had given the boat yard a list of items to be done. While doing those, they, as well as the surveyor, discovered other issues. We had all of them addressed with few exceptions.
The following week, we had 5 hits. Two of them wanted to see the boat but had issues with timing. They would let us know when they could come to Sarasota early in June. Due to the extended work needed, we didn’t leave the boat yard until Monday June 3rd. But on Sunday prior to leaving, we received a call from a couple living just south of Miami. They wanted to drive up on Monday to see the boat. We explained that it wouldn’t be back in the marina until after noon time. They met us at 1:30 PM Monday afternoon.
Our last voyage on Mon Amie as owners was Monday morning. it was hard to imagine giving up this lifestyle. We really enjoyed it and had so many fantastic memories. Mike and Barbara spent a couple of hours with us that afternoon. The following day, Mike called me and made an offer. They like many other Krogen “wanabe’s” belonged to the Krogen Cruisers organization hoping one day to find the right Krogen for them. On Wednesday, we accepted the offer and hired a local broker to do the administrative work.
Back on Tuesday, one of the couples from Atlanta called and said they were planning to drive from Atlanta on Wednesday to see the boat. They were convinced Mon Amie was for them. Al told them that we had an offer that we were considering and would most likely accept. That didn’t stop them. They drove down and spent 2-1/2 hours on board Mon Amie with Al. They wanted to be sure that if the sale didn’t go through, they would contract a sale with us. That same afternoon, we received a call from the third person who wanted to see the boat. He was an attorney and was out of state for a while and, therefore, couldn’t see the boat earlier. Al told him about the contract. All he said was, “my loss.”
The new owners contracted the same surveyor we had done. Al took them out on the sea trial. All went well. The sale was finalized on July 7th, six years and one month after we bought her. It was a fantastic ride!!
Selling Mon Amie
6/5/13
After owning her for 6 years and living aboard for 4 years, we put Mon Amie up for sale the first week in April with mixed emotions.
